Cellphones
1973 - Martin Cooper Invents the First Cell Phone
Martin Cooper was an American engineer born on December 26, 1928. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. He is credited with inventing the first handheld cellular mobile phone. He also made the first public phone call on the first handheld cellular mobile phone. In 1954, Cooper left his job at the Teletype Corporation in Chicago and joined Motorola, Inc. in Schaumburg, Illinois. He was brought in as a senior development engineer in the mobile equipment group. During his tenure at Motorola, Inc., Cooper developed a multitude of products. One of these products was cellular-esque portable handheld radio system, developed and produced in 1967 for the Chicago police department. By the early 70s, Cooper was the head of Motorola's communications systems division. It was here in 1973 that he conceived of the first portable cell phone. The early designs were based on the handheld radio system he had developed 6 years earlier for the Chicago police department. The first cellular phone was inspired by a mix of the 1967 handheld radio system, as well as Dick Tracy's wrist radio. The first iteration of the cell phone was called the DynaTAC 8000x, and it weighed 2.5 pounds and measured 10 inches long. Due to its size, the phone came to be nicknamed "the brick."

Justification - Martin Cooper and the cellphone were included in this project for a good reason. Prior to the invention of the cell phone, people were not able to make mobile calls, unless they had a car phone. But, due to Cooper's invention, people were not relegated to cars if they had to make a mobile call. Now anyone could make a call from anywhere. This invention helped improve the world.
